Ants, Wasps, Cockroaches, Flies, Fleas, Electric fly killers, Moles,  Squirrels and more......

Mice Mice are much smaller than rats but they are capable of spreading similar diseases, including Weils disease, and causing damage. They have the same gnawing habits as rats.

They are about 8cm long with the tail adding a further 9cm. As with rats, sight is poor, but the senses of smell, taste and hearing are excellent. Mice are found both inside and outside buildings, but seldom in drainage systems.

Mice are far more erratic and inquisitive in their behaviour than rats. This means they tend to wander over food products and surfaces, depositing droppings and dribbling urine, and consequently causing serious contamination. They will feed from a large number of sites, eating most foods but with a preference for cereals.

Mice live for about a year and become sexually mature at six weeks old. They can produce up to eight litters a year with as many as six young per litter.

Identification  Because rodents are essentially nocturnal, it is unusual to see any actually running around before detecting tell-tale signs of the infestation. These signs can include damage to packaging and possibly parts of the building, spilled food products, gnaw marks, droppings, grease marks, smell and possibly footprints.

Summer pests During the summer months our main problem is the demand for treatments to destroy wasps. But the summer is also a time when flies and ants are a nuisance and sometimes a serious problem.

Flies The common housefly is uncommonly dangerous, probably the most dangerous pest of all. This is because it is so difficult to control and has the ability to spread a large number of diseases; particularly those linked with food.

Flies lay their eggs in filthy material, become grossly contaminated and then contaminate our food, not just by landing on it, but also because of the unpleasant way they feed. They don't have biting mouthparts, so they vomit their digestive juices out onto the food and then suck back these juices together with some partly digested food. These charming table manners mean that the food becomes contaminated with all sorts of unpleasant bacteria. When the flies have finished eating, it's our turn!

Other types of flies are attracted to our food and contaminate it in a different but equally unpleasant way. Blowflies, for example, don't just feed on our food, they lay their eggs directly on it. The eggs rapidly turn into maggots.

It's almost impossible to keep flies out, but covered, clean and tidy refuse storage reduces the problem and covering open food helps to prevent contamination. In commercial kitchens fly screens and electric fly killers are often necessary to protect food products.

Ants Like wasps and bees, ants are social insects and not usually involved in the spread of disease. They nest underground and are mainly found outside, but where nests are close to or under buildings ants will come inside. They are particularly attracted to sweet tasting foods so can cause contamination problems.

In the summer the male and female ants leave the nest in large numbers over a short period of time. Often this happens at all of the nests in an area. The male and female ants are larger that the worker ants, which we are used to seeing, and they are winged. If they get indoors in large numbers they can be quite frightening.

Pharaoh ants are much smaller than the common black ant; they are found inside and often infest hospitals, where they are capable of spreading infections.

Wasps Wasps do not spread infectious diseases in the same way that flies and cockroaches do, but they can contaminate food and can deliver a painful sting, which to hypersensitive individuals can be life threatening. Wasps are social insects; queen wasps, the only individuals that survive over the winter, start a new nest in the spring, these nests are usually underground or in buildings.

Early in the summer wasps present few problems and, in fact, are useful garden predators because the workers feed on a number of plant parasites such as aphids. Later in the summer, the workers main job is done; they become semi-redundant and have time to indulge their attraction for sweet foods. They enter kitchens and other food premises - especially bakeries. The use of mesh screens and covers for food products help prevent contamination.

Treatment of nests is always best left to professional pest controllers. If you have an active nest in or around your property and the wasps are worrying you, phone the number given above; we can usually arrange a treatment within two working days of your call. Pests for 'all seasons'  rats mice rodents are serious pests because of their ability to spread a number of diseases and the damage they can cause to food products and buildings.

The species most commonly found is the brown or common rat. Adult rats are about 23cm long, excluding the tail, which adds an extra 18cm. They have thick brownish fur and poor eyesight, but have excellent senses of smell, taste and hearing. Rats are strong swimmers, are excellent at burrowing and will live indoors, outdoors or in the sewerage system. They will eat almost anything, feeding from a small number of sites only.

Rats have an impressive breeding potential. They become sexually mature at two months and can have six litters per year with as many as eight young per litter. The average life span is 14 months.

Rodents have front teeth that are constantly growing. In order to control the length of these teeth they need to gnaw on hard materials. Rats will gnaw on wood, metal, plastic, virtually anything in fact. In doing this they can damage water pipes, electric cables and gas pipes, as well as pieces of timber.

The diseases they can spread include food poisoning, some parasitic and viral diseases and Weils disease. The germs that cause these diseases are carried on or in rats; wherever they go they will contaminate surfaces or food products with some or all of these germs.

Weils disease is particularly worth mentioning; it is caused by a bacterium found in the urine of rats. Wherever rats have urinated the environment will be contaminated by these bacteria, which can penetrate through damaged skin and enter the blood stream of humans. They can cause serious liver damage; Weils disease, or leptospiral jaundice, can be fatal if not detected early. People who's work or leisure activities involve them in areas where rats may have been need to be aware of the risk and the early symptoms of the disease, so that they can inform their doctor. The early symptoms resemble those of flu; a blood test is necessary to diagnose the disease properly.

Insects Cockroaches Cockroaches are another serious public health pest because they can spread a large number of gastro-intestinal and other diseases. They can be found in homes and domestic areas as well as commercial food premises, especially in blocks of flats, where they may live in kitchen ductwork and the drainage system.

The two most important species from the public health point of view are the Oriental cockroach and the German cockroach. The adult Oriental cockroach may be 24mm long and almost black in colour; only the males have wings. The German cockroach is smaller, 14mm long, and is yellow brown in colour; both the males and females are winged.

Cockroaches are nocturnal insects; spending the day in cracks and crevices where they are difficult to detect. When you start to see evidence of an infestation, it is usually well established and professional help is needed.

Pest control professionals often use sticky traps to find out the severity of the infestation. Insecticide sprays and/or baits are used to get rid of the cockroaches, but because they like out of the way hiding places, treatments may take many months and it may be impossible to get rid of them completely.

Fleas Fleas are parasites of warm blooded animals; spending most of their life on their host and feeding on its blood. Fleas usually stay with one host, but if it is absent they will feed on other animals, including humans. Most domestic infestations are caused by cat or dog fleas.

Fleas lay their eggs in animal bedding or carpets. When the eggs hatch, larvae emerge, which grow and then pupate. The pupae may remain dormant in empty houses for some time and only hatch when animals or humans enter the area and provide themselves as a host.

Bedbugs Bedbugs are parasites that feed on human blood. They are found anywhere that humans live. During the daytime they hide in cracks and crevices in furniture and the fabric of the building. At night they come out for their blood meal. If no suitable host is available, bedbugs can survive for over 12 months, until another unfortunate victim arrives.

bedbug bites can be painful and can be sites of secondary infections. It is thought that bedbugs do not spread any infectious diseases directly. Treatment is often difficult because of their hiding places; sometimes it is necessary to remove wallpaper, skirtings and architraves before spraying with insecticide.

Occasionally bedbugs may be brought into a house with old/antique furniture. There have also been cases where bedbugs have been accidentally brought home in luggage after foreign travel.

Insects that damage fabrics and/or contaminate food There are a number of insects that damage fabrics and/or contaminate food, including all sorts of beetles, weevils and moths. Although they are not involved in the spread of disease, they contaminate and destroy food products, and some may cause damage to clothes and furnishings.
